"What Can We Learn from Trees?
In the Presence of Trees is a yearlong dance theater performance series, to be performed in Hartford and Greater Hartford urban forest locations in 2022-23. The project will engage audiences in a dialogue about the lessons trees can teach us about communities, climate change, and the implications of environmental justice issues and inequities.
Art is the first way that human beings studied and recorded their responses to the natural world around them. Modern science can describe mechanisms and processes, predict outcomes, and prescribe actions, but art can interpret what science tells us in a way that individuals can experience it more fully. JDPP sees its role as opening a pathway for youth and adults to enter an imagined world of the tree: slow down their sense of time, feel the movement that emanates from stillness, and understand the rhythm of the canopy. There is much we can learn from this inquiry, most especially the significance of trees in the urban, suburban, rural, and wild landscape and their potential to heal our planet and ourselves."
