Fényes Banda consists of friends who met through the Hungarian/Transylvanian folk dance and music communities of New York, New Jersey and New England. They play authentic music from Hungarian villages and towns, learn from field recordings, and also from some of the greatest Hungarian players of this music, who keep the traditions of the Carpathian Basin alive. The band formed in 2012, and it is currently the only Hungarian folk music band in New York City.
Fényes Banda performed numerous times over the past two years for Hungarian cultural heritage events such as the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the New York Times Travel Show, the 92nd Street Y Multicultural Festival, the first Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day, the Pelham Arts Center International Folk Arts Event, and the Golden Festivals 2013, 2014 and 2015. The band volunteered extensively in Hungarian educational programs and community events to provide live music and dance instructions, such as children's dance-houses (New York City, New Brunswick, NJ, Wallingford, CT, Linden, NJ) workshops and dancehouses for adults (New York, Wallingford, New Brunswick), dance workshops at the Arany János Hungarian School's events, the multicultural festivals of The Dalton School and St. Bernard’s School, NY, and performed at Hungarian National Holidays (e.g. March 15).
